Erin and Elle, the Indian Runners, have now been with us for a year and Clover , the Rouen, eighteen months. Of our four ducks Lucky, a Khaki Campbell, has been with us the longest [2 years] and has survived three fox attacks, hence the name! She seems to be the only reliable layer but yesterday we were in for a surprise.
For the past week or so she has been keeping quite a low profile and hiding herself away under the tree, so we decided to investigate. Tucked away underneath the foliage was a perfectly constructed nest made with twigs and containing no less than NINE eggs, all very warm but with no hope of hatching because alas our little group does not include a drake! Her broodiness will inevitably pass, but until it does we will leave the eggs and let Lucky follow her instincts and do what nature intended....nine little ducklings...what a thought!
